Paint and coating industry use a great deal of water in the production process and also produce large amount of contaminated wastewater.

There are strict regulations for paint-coating industry wastewater since it is highly polluted with organic and inorganic pollutants, biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD) flammable liquids, suspended solids, heavy metals, toxic materials, turbidity, color, varnish, polish,
insulation chemicals, rosins and solvents. Major processes for paint-coating industry wastewater treatment are physical, chemical and
biological processes. Physical treatments involve steps such as filtration, sedimentation, flotation in order to remove floatable solids. Chemical treatments involve, adjustment of the pH, addition of chemicals to oxidize, reduce and neutralize to coagulate and remove suspended solids. Finally,
biological treatment involves biological action of microorganisms to minimize degree of hazard of the wastewater. For paint-coating wastewater treatment, Sequencing batch reactor (SBR) is the most common biological treatment method. Adsorption and membrane processes can also be used to
remove organic pollutants and dye from water.
