Mining Industry

Wastewater treatment of mining industry wastewater has to be properly managed to prevent water and soil pollution arising from acid or alkaline leaching of heavy metals. Mining industry wastewater contain large quantity of heavy metals, acids, alkalis, suspended solids, color, turbidity, organic and inorganic pollutants.

Preliminary treatment like screening and skimming is applied for removing floating objects, oil, grease and other impurities in the wastewater treatment plant. After the preliminary treatment, primary treatment such as sedimentation, neutralization and equalization involves settling of colloidal and suspended matter as sludge. Secondary treatment methods such as oxidation pond, activated sludge process and trickling filters provides removal of dissolved organic matter by biological processes.

Depending on the final desired water quality, tertiary treatment options like chlorination, reverse osmosis, membrane filtration and electro-deionization can be used to remove inorganic impurities at molecular level.
