Pulp and paper industry is an important source for wastewater production which needs a proper treatment to avoid severe pollution of the environment. Effluent wastewater from pulp and paper industry contain high amount of sediments, biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), chlorinated organic compounds, absorbable organic halides (AOX), organic compounds such as degradation products of carbohydrates, lignin and extractives.

Basically primary, secondary and tertiary treatment is used in pulp and paper industrial wastewater treatment plant. Primary treatment such as clarification and screening is applied to remove solids and particulate matter and secondary biological treatment processes are applied for removing biodegradable organic matter and decreasing effluent toxicity. Moreover, tertiary treatment technologies such as UV disinfection, ion exchange, granular activated carbon and membrane filtration can also be used for further treatment and obtain higher effluent qualities.
