The wastewater produced during de-gumming, neutralization and deodorization of refining of vegetable oil is huge in amount and contains significant amount of organic pollutants such as sugar, nitrogenous compounds, volatile acids and poly-alcohols, pectin, fats and polyphemus.

Vegetable oil industry wastewater requires adequate treatment for oil and grease removal, pH correction, suspended solid removal and nutrient removal. It can be treated either separately or in combination of biological and chemical treatment. While activated sludge process offer an easy and cost effective alternative to chemical treatment, coagulation process is one of the most effective methods for removing the pollutants from vegetable oil industry wastewater.
